Estonian language courses for foreign students

The Division of Estonian was formed in 1996 separation from the then Section of Estonian and Russian of the Language Centre. At that time, the state system of education was still incapable of guaranteeing leavers of Russian-language secondary schools with such a level of competence of the Estonian language that would have made them adequately competitive with leavers of Estonian schools in the field of higher education. As there were still some study groups at the University whose language of instruction was Russian, the Division faced a twofold task: first, preparing the learners for the examination of Estonian as the country’s citizens’ official language and secondly, teaching Estonian as the language the learners would need in their future work.

We can admit that the recent years have seen a noticeable upsurge of interest in learning Estonian at the elementary level, first and foremost among international students who can choose between intensive courses of Estonian taught either through the medium of Finnish or English. The Division of Estonian also runs intensive courses through the medium of Russian for learners enrolled for the so-called Estonian-language year.

Apart from the highly successful intensive courses, the Division of Estonian is focused on teaching Estonian for Specific Purposes to learners of various specialists. In addition, we offer courses of Finnish.

Our main areas in teaching are:
Estonian for professional communication
Intensive Estonian (skills taught separately)
In-depth teaching of functional grammar

Our areas of activity involve:
Methodology of teaching Estonian as a second language
Writing textbooks and materials
Organizing examinations of Estonian as the country’s official language
